Land & Building Shapes
Source : Creative Home
Date : 1 May 2015
by Dato Joey Yap

The layout of the land outside the house as well as the house itself plays an important role in Feng Shui. This is because these geographical layouts of the area represent the physical container where Qi is contained. If the land is irregularly-shaped, for example, it can cause Qi to be distributed in an irregular, disorganized, manner. That is why it is preferable to obtain a piece of land that is square or rectangular-shaped as this allow for a balanced and optimal flow of Qi.

Another banned land-shape is the triangular shaped land. This land formation is also not ideal in Feng Shui because the triangle represents the element of Fire in its harsh and destructive form. And when you superimpose the compass onto the triangle, you will notice that certain directional sectors will be missing as each of the 8 compass directions govern different aspects of human life and it would be ideal if all 8 compass directions are present.

If your property or building happens to be on a triangular land shape formation, there are certain things you can do to help balance out the negativity of the land itself. For starters, you will want to alter the shape of the triangular land into a more suitable shape like a four-sided trapezium. Simply build a wall to border and redefine the land shape and adding some water features will help to negate the negative effects of the Fire-shaped land. Also ensure that the property being built has a distinct square structure that represents the element of Earth.

Shape & Elements

Now, you might question or wonder why shapes and the Five Elements play an important role in having a favorable land for your home and building. That is because in the study of the Five Elements or the Phases of Qi, one can deduce that Wood produces Fire, and Fire produces Earth (Earth produces Metal, and so on). Since the land shape is Fire, the next best thing to do is for it to 'support' the property.

But how do shapes correspond to the five elements? Remember that the shape represents the capacity or quality of the container of the Qi. If you have a container of Fire, it will attract that type of Qi. Or if your container (land or house) is Water-shaped, it will store Water Qi predominantly.

Should your plot of land be irregularly shaped, this will exude the element of Water, indicating its shapelessness. To counter this shapelessness, you will need to ensure that the property you are building here is long and slender to represent the element of Wood, since Water produces Wood. If you are unable to build the property in the desired shape, you have to find a way to redefine the shape of the land into a near square because Water represents instability and constant change.

That is why square and rectangular shape lands are the most favoured shapes for property because they represent the element of Earth and Wood respectively. These elements are stable in nature and will allow Qi to be distributed evenly. If a building is rounded with a dome, they will tend to store Metal Qi.

Circular shapes belong to the element of Metal, thus rounded buildings, domes, and stadiums are all Metal element buildings and tend to store Metal Qi after a few years. Also be on the look-out for sunken and protruding land types. Think of a shallow version of a bowl, where the land will dip slightly towards the center where the Qi will be gathered right in the epicenter of the bowl. Your house should be built here to receive all the incoming Qi flow.

However, if the land protrudes up at the center, the Qi will move away from the middle and when the land gradient is too high, Qi can even slip away from the land. This is not ideal for any property development. Remember that Qi flows like water based on the natural flow of gravity, originating from the peaks of the highest mountains and travelling down to its lowest vicinity. It will then be contained or collected in its own container – either as land formation or natural body of water such as a pond or lake.

To conclude, if you wish to have your home built on a favourable plot of land, make sure that your land and your house lie in the path of Qi's flow to receive its positive effects. Good luck!
