As we become more aware of the need to live sustain ably, we have taken concrete steps towards reducing our carbon footprints. When seeking a new home however, how can we be sure of finding an environment that is in turn friendly towards us?
Classical Feng Shui has been proven to be immensely useful as a tool in unearthing a home with auspicious Feng Shui, and there are many easy rules of thumb you can apply, even as a novice. Look for such natural features in the vicinity of your intended abode as mountains, or a body of water.
Mountains represent the yin component of the earth, which gives out qi or energy, while water in turn represents yang, the active component which harnesses the qi in the environment. Having a good balance of both yin and yang is ideal, not least because it means this particular location has fantastic Feng Shui potential.
Spotting a mountain may sound like a walk in the park, but identifying the right kind of mountain- particularly in an urban setting- can be challenging, to say the least! It may sound obvious, but an area having the world 'hills' or 'heights' as part of its name is likely to have some kind of raised landform in the neighbourhood. If you are keen house hunter, you may also have gleaned that prestigious residential addresses tend to be in very close proximity to mountains!
Aving found a mountain, how do you find out whether it's any good? Common sense plays a big role here: verdant mountains release positive energy while rocky mountains with cracks, crags and exposed patches tend to release aggressive qi. A 'good' home should also have mountains flanking its rear- known as the Black Turtle formation in classical Feng Shui- with an unfettered view out the front that is known as the Red Phoenix, and it should be the same level or slightly lower than the house. The hill on the left should ideally be higher than that of the right, and it is recognised as the Four Celestial Animals formation.
If you can, you should try and find an area that also encompasses water features, whether it's a meandering river, pond, or lake. A low mountain (one which stands at eyebrow level from a distance) is also desirable. A left standing hill formation is a Green Dragon while a right standing hill formation is a White Tiger.
Because mountain ranges are rare in urban settings, Black Turtles, Green Dragons and White Tigers can also be embodied by buildings or trees while the Red Phoenix could concurrently be represented by a fountains or field. Getting back to my earlier mention of the Four Celestial Animals- this formation is particularly desirable because it facilitates the accumulation of positive qi, which flows gently into the house and its environs and enables occupants to enjoy a better quality of life, in every sense of the word.
Once you have located the house of your dreams, and it has the requisite vista of a lush green hill in the right position, it's time to pull out your trusty Feng Shui compass to measure the direction of the mountain in relation to your prospective home. If the mountain is located in the Northeast, West, Northwest or South, then you've come to the right place. The Feng Shui of this property will enable you and your family to enjoy harmonious, happy relationships, good health, and prosperity.
If however, the mountain isn't in one of those directions, you should nevertheless ascertain whether the ground level of the mountain is tangibly higher than that of the property. If it is, there is still much benefit to be obtained from this house.
Do remember however that the Feng Shui of this formation has a shelf life, and only lasts till 2043 or Period One in Feng Shui speaks. For the foreseeable future however, it will make a great home for anyone!
