Living with Highways & Railways
Source : Creative Home (June Issue)

With the widespread ongoing extension of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines in Klang Valley currently, you may find yourself questioning how this may impact your property in terms of Feng Shui.

Roads are seen as virtual water. Just like rivers, they carry Qi towards and away from the property based on direction. Ideally, Qi should always move in a serene way around your property and not in a direct aggressive manner. Highways and railways are usually likened to gushing rivers due to constant flow of fast and heavy traffic. So when it comes to property, it is not an ideal location to be situated near an elevated highway or railway - especially if it is straight with fast-moving traffic. Such features channel unstable and merciless Qi or Sha Qi. The presence of such a feature might also disrupt any positive Qi flowing towards the property.

If you want to know if your property is close enough to be affected by such a feature, assess it with a simple bit of logic; when it is visible and it affects your unit if the highway or railway somehow tumbles down, then your property is already vulnerable to the effects of the Sha Qi. Aside from that, the presence of intense and noisy traffic also poses the problem of Sound Sha, another undesirable feature in Feng Shui that interferes with the property occupants' rest and sleep, and ultimately health.

If you are staying on landed property and suddenly find yourself in the shadow of elevated highway or railway in construction, this is also considered undesirable. This is known as Yin Sha and represents fast moving Yin Qi affecting the house and depleting the Qi. This similarly applies if you are staying in a high-rise with your unit situated below the elevated highway or railway.

However, not everything about a highway or railway is considered bad in Feng Shui. For instance, if you are staying in a high-rise unit that is located on the levels above the elevated highway or railway, you are not affected by the Sha Qi. In such scenarios, you might even find that it favourable for you if the highway or railway is curving in a sentimental manner towards your unit, particularly if the curve supports the Flying Stars of your property.

Take into account as well if there are negative features like a cemetery or graveyard facing your property. If there is, then the presence of a highway or railway between your property and the negative feature is considered favourable. In this case, the fast-moving Qi on the highway serves as a barrier to block off any negative Qi emanating from the negative feature.

So if you are considering buying property near an elevated highway or railway, especially condominiums or apartments, follow a simple rule of thumb; avoid properties which are on the same level as the elevated highway or railway. The higher it is from the highway or railway, the less likely the unit will be affected by any Sha. It boils down to just plain common sense; no one would want to live next to highway where sound pollution and dust from traffic is going to be a constant problem.

With all these things considered, always remember to take into consideration the bigger picture of the property's surroundings rather than just a highway or railway alone. Whenever in doubt, it's better to get the opinion of a Feng Shui professional!
