The mix of international and local students during the incipient Yi Jing Mastery course conducted by Joey Yap recently, bore ample testimony to growing interest in this ancient Chinese tool of divination.
This course, which was held at the Mastery Academy’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur from 19th – 22nd November 2006, also saw the attendance of a number of senior students who wanted to deepen their knowledge of Yi Jing.
Before the class began, the students, many of whom had been acquainted during Mastery Academy’s previous courses, mingled and discussed their understanding of Yi Jing and their expectations of the Yi Jing Mastery Series.
Unsurprisingly, all eyes and ears were trained on Joey, as he commenced the class and began explaining what Yi Jing was all about, noting that it is essentially a tool that helps in decision-making and is closely related to ‘change’. After all, as Joey explained, the key concept of the Yi Jing principle is `continuous change’.
“Change is the medium or catalyst through which humankind and things are transferred and transformed into new forms. The Yi Jing recognizes this by understanding that all things are subject to a change in form, and this concept encapsulates both our conscious and sub-conscious beings.” Joey explained firmly.
With these words, course participants embarked on an eye-opening trip in exploring one of the most venerated classical Chinese texts – the Yi Jing.
Module 1
In Module 1, the students were introduced to the fundamentals of Yi Jing. What made it all the more special was Joey’s approach, which enables students of Yi Jing to interpret the 64 Hexagrams without having to continuously refer to the original texts.
More importantly, through this module, Joey also demonstrated to his students that all these – and more - could be done without the need to use paraphernalia such as turtle shells or yarrow sticks!
Besides learning the fundamentals of Yi Jing, also known as the `Zhou Yi’, due to the heavy influence of the literature and government administrations of the Zhou Dynasty (1122 BC – 256 BC), the students also gained invaluable insights into the ideas and philosophies of great sages such as Fu Xi, King Wen and Confucius. This presented them with an ideal platform to deepen their understanding of the Yi Jing and its tenets with.
This introductory module also presented students with the opportunity to study the correct way of reading the profound Zhou Yi Original Gua texts. Without these texts, it would be next to impossible to decipher the wisdom of Yi, Joey said.
The students learnt that the founding principle of the Yi Jing is the principle of Yin and Yang. This Classic of Change is basically a study of numbers – a code written in the language of Yin and Yang.
The Yi Jing originally functioned as an Oracle in ancient China; facilitating efforts to seek divine guidance from the Universe by giving a “Yes” or “No” answer to questions posed.
However, as society grew and became more civilized and sophisticated, the needs of the people also expanded. Joey proceeded to explain that narrowing answers to merely “Yes” or “No” was soon regarded as overly simplistic and obsolete, as more information was required.
Always one to seek ways towards making his courses beneficial and enjoyable for students, Joey shared with them the right methods of divination and revealed trade secrets that opened the world of Yi Jing to them.
Module 2
Joey proceeded to elevate the knowledge he had imparted upon his students during Module 1, by personally guiding them into the Yi Jing Mastery Module 2 course. If doing two Yi Jing courses back-to-back was grueling, course participants certainly did not let this show, judging from their enthusiastic expressions as they took their place for Module 2.
The intensive Module 2 course brought the students to a sophisticated stage in their studies of Chinese Metaphysics, by giving them a deeper understanding of the Gua.
True to his innovative nature, Joey reveled in pioneering one of the most comprehensive and advanced Yi Jing courses, conducted in English. Benefiting from this approach were his students, who did not require further persuasion when the Plum Blossom Numerology (Mei Hua Yi Shu) techniques were shared with them.
Next on the syllabus were useful methodologies and techniques of calculating the hexagrams. These are pre-requisites towards predicting virtually every aspect of life; ranging from the weather, financial issues, traveling, the character and personality of others, future events and even efforts to regain lost items!
In addition, Joey also taught his students how to utilize the Plum Blossom techniques in understanding the Feng Shui of a home or graveyard.
The understanding gained from Module 2 also enabled students to draw and build upon the knowledge they had amassed from Module 1, in developing their powers of observation to help them make instant yet accurate predictions. Business-oriented students found that knowledge of Plum Blossom Numerology could provide them with invaluable assistance in making business decisions such as buying land/property, investing in new ventures or even career moves.
