A number of participants had a first taste of how to undertake a Date Selection when they attended the half-day Date Selection workshop held at the Mastery Academy of Chinese Metaphysics on 24th June 2006.
Conducted by Mr. Hung Hin Cheong, an active member of the Mastery Academy community and a senior student, the workshop received a warm welcome from the students.
Date Selection is a time-honoured tradition in Chinese culture based on the adage that “Not All Days Are Created Equal”. Its origins are mired in history and often contradictory, techniques, have been used, which can result in confusion for inexperienced students.
Today, an essential classics reference for practitioners and students of Date Selection is Xieji, a treaty compiled in 1740 during the reign of Emperor Qianlong.
In the workshop, Mr. Hung introduced a simplified and systematic method of date selection which relies heavily on the Xieji.
According to him, the simplified method will make the art of Date Selection easier to comprehend for the student. The layman’s approach to date selection is to simply read off the Tongshu, a yearly compilation of Chinese calendar and this is viewed as less than satisfactory for Chinese Metaphysics students while classical texts can be quite intimidating for them.
The student listened attentively to Mr. Hung’s explaination on the subject and were seen jotting down the significant points in their notes. After the workshop, they mingled with Mr. Hung to get further explanation about the Date Selection process. The workshop has surely given them a fresh idea as to what date selection in Chinese Metaphysics is all about.
